Takeaways From Renegades’ Low-Scoring Win Over Roughnecks
It was far from a pretty game, but the Arlington Renegades remain undefeated on the season after an 11-9 win over the Houston Roughnecks on Sunday afternoon.
The Renegades finished with 298 yards of offense while the Roughnecks mustered 225. Penalties hurt Arlington with seven for 55 yards. Houston struggled on third down, converting just three of 12.
Arlington improved to 2-0, the first time the franchise has ever done that. The Roughnecks drop to 0-2. This is Renegades head coach Bob Stoops’ first win against Roughnecks head coach Curtis Johnson.
Takeaways From Roughnecks-Renegades Game
Dae Dae Hunter Takes Leading Role in Backfield
Last week, Kalen Ballage took the league by storm, but his backup Dae Dae Hunter was showing off his skills. Hunter finished with 63 rushing yards and 22 receiving yards in the win.
Overall, Arlington's rushing attack hit 98 rushing yards in the game and averaged over four yards per carry. It wasn’t quite the performance of Week 1, but Hunter and Ballage are becoming a nice one-two punch in the backfield.
Is the Anthony Brown Experiment Over?
It was another dull game for Houston’s starting quarterback as Brown completed just 14 of his 30 passes for 179 yards and one touchdown to one interception. For the second straight game, Brown was replaced by Nolan Henderson at quarterback for one drive.
At some point, Roughnecks head coach Curtis Johnson has to move on from Brown and roll with Henderson. Brown is struggling to complete high percentage passes, and while it isn’t all on him, he’s the quarterback, so he has to take
Offenses in UFL Continue to Struggle
Every offense in the UFL through three games in Week 2 has struggled to score touchdowns through the first three quarters of a game. It was more of the same in the Roughnecks-Renegades as the two combined for six points entering the fourth quarter.
Arlington could move the ball, but a missed field goal, a fumble, and costly penalties kept their offense from moving. The Renegades capitalized in the fourth quarter with a Luis Perez-Deontay Burnett touchdown pass and two-point conversion. While both teams did score touchdowns, it took over 45 minutes to get it done which is something that has to be addressed in the future by the teams and by the league.
