Impact of Significant QB Move in Memphis

The Memphis Showboats made the most significant move in training camp as there is a change at quarterback.
The Showboats released Quinten Dormady from the team on Saturday, according to PFN’s James Larsen. The move comes after the Showboats initially traded for Dormady late last year to compete for the quarterback job.
Dormady came in last year for the San Antonio Brahmas to be their starting quarterback after starter Chase Garbers was injured and missed time. In seven games, Dormady threw for 1,205 yards and six touchdowns to six interceptions.
His previous spring football experience came in 2023 with the Orlando Guardians in the XFL. That experience for Dormady was not as smooth as he initially missed time due to an investigation into whether he was allegedly sharing the Guardians’ playbook with other teams. After being cleared of any wrongdoing, he would go on to pass for 1,507 yards and 10 touchdowns to five interceptions in seven games.
It remains a mystery why Dormady was released, but it leaves the Showboats with E.J. Perry and Troy Williams battling for the starting quarterback job. Perry started games for the Michigan Panthers last year, while Williams came in late in the season in place of Case Cookus to start games in Memphis.
Both quarterbacks are mobile and can make throws on the run. Perry had more success in the UFL last year, but that’s because the Panthers were significantly better than the Showboats.
As Memphis looks to repair a broken offensive line from a season ago, Perry and Williams make more sense as starters. They can get on the move and take pressure off the line to block for an extended period.
New Showboats head coach Ken Whisenhunt has his work cut out for him as Memphis searches for a new starter. Will a new quarterback be brought into the picture to compete with Perry and Williams? This has opened the door to new possibilities that will make the next few weeks in Memphis more intriguing in training camp.
