Week 3 of the UFL is complete, as the fears of a labor strike, in addition to the hope of expansion, seem like a distant memory as the 2nd season is on its way. Week 3 showed fans plenty of promise for some teams, while other teams found themselves being exactly who we thought they were. With the season continuing to ramp up, Alt-Football Digest took it upon themselves to hand out Player of the Week honors for those who have distinguished themselves from their peers.
Offensive Player of the Week: aNTHONY mCfARLAND sAN aNTONIO bRAHMAS 7 CARRIES 54 YARDS, 2 RECEPTIONS 21 YARDS 1 TD
While the Brahmas couldn’t pull out a victory this week, it had nothing to do with Anthony McFarland's effort. McFarland finally “popped” this week in the UFL, totaling 75 All-Purpose Yards and a Touchdown, effectively being the cog that allowed San Antonio to be competitive. While this week in the UFL could arguably be the best week of football collectively across the four games, in my opinion, McFarland did the little things that allowed a winless Brahmas team to be extremely competitive and give hope for the final seven games of the season.
Honorable Mention: Ty Scott D.C. Defenders, Bryce Perkins Michigan Panthers, Kwamie Lassiter II Memphis Showboats, Zaquandre White Houston Roughnecks, Jaden Shirden Michigan Panthers,
Defensive Player of the Week: Andre Mintze 2 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 2 tfls, 2 ff, 1 fr
The UFL might give the whole Defenders Defense a the Player of the Week, but Mintze was making an impact constantly. Mintze set the tone especially in the first half wreaking havoc on the Manny Wilkins, eventually forcing St. Louis to adjust protection and open up the game for his teammates. While his stat line was clearly impressive his impact overall on the Defenders Defense made more waves than what the casual viewer sees.
Honorable Mention: Kenny Willekes Michigan Panthers, Frank Ginda Michigan Panthers, Leon O'Neal Jr. Houston Roughnecks, Jordan Williams San Antonio Brahmas, Kyahva Tezino Birmingham Stallions, Travis Feeney St. Louis Battlehawks, Chris Payton-Jones St. Louis Battlehawks, Sam Kidd D.C. Defenders
Special Teams Player of the Week: Devin Ross Michigan Panthers 6 KR 212 Return Yards
I was considering putting Rodrigo Blankenship as the STPOTW, but when I rewatched the Panthers-Brahmas game, I had to give Devin Ross his due (as I did with Anthony McFarland). Ross changed the field position game for Michigan, totaling over 200 yards, keeping the pressure on the Brahmas and giving Michigan short fields for Bryce Perkins and the Offense. In addition to his contributions in special teams, Ross also added a couple of key first downs that also gave Michigan an edge this past weekend.
Honorable Mention: Amari Rodgers Birmingham Stallions, Mike Rivers Houston Roughnecks, Rodrigo Blankenship St. Louis Battlehawks, Chris Rowland D.C. Defenders, Matt Mengal Memphis Showboats, Marquette King Arlington Renegades
